Training for Public Health Practitioners, Institutions, and Organizations

THE PUBLIC SQUARE

Training developed for hospital networks, public health institutions, nonprofit health organizations, municipal, city, and county public health departments to understand religion as a determining factor in the health outcomes of Black LGBTQ+ people.

To date, 0/8 historically Black Christian denominations theologically affirm LGBTQ+ individuals.

THE PULPIT & THE PEW

This curriculum helps congregants and congregational leaders move their community towards the ideal of the Advocating Church.

Developed from the insights and lived experiences of Black LGBTQ+ Christians, the lessons, objectives, and activities created for this learning experience are directly informed by their stories.

Pastors and Church Leaders will be able to:

Understand

The difference between othering and belonging within the context of the Black church.

Reflect

On a personal experience of othering they or a loved one has had within the context of the Black church.

Describe

How othering negatively impacts LGBTO+ churchgoers’ participation and engagement in the Black church based on narratives from the Pride in the Pews “Can I Get A Witness?” Project and Emerging Church Leader Model.

Identify

Where your church lands on the Institutional Church Continuum, and compare its standing with the Pride in the Pews ideal of the Advocating Church.

Develop

An action plan for intentional, incremental, institutional steps to move their congregations towards the ideal of the Advocating Church using the Start­Stop-Continue method.
